The Case for Spring

I’ve officially packed our winter coats because spring is in full bloom and Texas couldn’t be more beautiful. Just a few weeks ago clusters of naked trees left me feeling cold and empty. Now clothed in candy apple green, the trees tell me that summer is coming. Here in Texas, lush grass stretches for miles and is sprinkled with pockets of bluebonnets and yellowbonnets and redbonnets.

It is a romantic time of year, a season of new beginnings, a season of change.

It is this time of year that my white legs see sunshine for the first time in months, and then I scratch them because I have attracted every mosquito on the block.

My mom and sister came for a visit two weeks ago. I took them to the Dallas Blooms exhibit at the Arboretum. All of the tulips were in bloom and it was breathtaking.

Evan and I are embarking on a life change. We bought a house: a front yard, a back yard, a kitchen, a handful of sinks, and a garage, a garbage can and garbage disposal. In many ways, we feel as though we have officially bloomed.

Dinner and a show

Evan and I celebrated our anniversary by getting all dressed up for dinner and a show. The weather has warmed up considerably and it was lovely to put on a great dress and hit the town. We headed to Sundance Square in downtown Ft. Worth and dined at Ferre — a cute mod-Italian place. The main course was satisfying but the dessert was AMAZING. Chocolate ganache with cinnamon ice cream. Heaven.

We then walked across to Ball Performance Hall, a lovely venue to see Fiddler On the Roof.

The part of Teyve was played by Independence Day actor, Harvey Fierstein. He has such a unique sound to his voice and great comedic timing. It was a blast!

Haven

With our 4th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Evan and I have reflected on the meaning of marriage–what it means to join together and build a life and a home. Over the weekend, we talked about our first place, a dusty one-bedroom dwarfed by Riverside’s historic homes. Hot water was a luxury and air-conditioning was non-existent, but we were so happy. It was within the walls of our first home that we learned how to be married. What it meant to do the dishes and to take out the trash. And to walk through a dark house with a baseball bat for the fourth night in a row. And to sit on our porch and eat popsicles for dinner.

I think about our home now. In a city I never thought I would live in. A new place with strangers and Mapquest and a big sky.

If our first home showed us that married life is blissfully predictable our home now shows us that as long as we are together, anything is possible.

Weekend eve

After a long work week, it was a delight to come home and see my man in the kitchen preparing dinner.

On the menu: Brown-butter Gnocci with Zucchini and Cherry Tomatoes. And yes. He was wearing an apron with my face on it.

It was divine.

Lover’s Day

Today is Valentine’s Day.

Today I am thankful for Evan. He is my best friend, my buddy and the guy I am thrilled to come home to everyday.

Every day we build our life together.

And it is a beautiful life full of sunshine and snowball fights, arguments and I’m-Sorry’s, lounge pants and suits, vacation days and sick days and of course, chocolate-covered strawberries.

Work at home day

I couldn’t sleep last night because the snow just kept falling from the sky. I’ve never seen so much snow in my entire life.

Evan is fighting a cold (that I brought home last week) and slept soundly in our warm bed while I watched the stillness of winter from our window.

My office building experienced a power outage and the roads were in terrible condition so Evan and I stayed home and worked in our pajamas. What a fascinating world it is to email a co-worker stuck in Phoenix, talk to a reporter in Washington D.C. and still have time to make edamame for lunch.

Snow day

It snowed 9 inches today…the most snowfall ever recorded in Dallas.

When we lived in California we would wake up early to take Casey to the beach. We would lay in the sand while our dog splashed on the shore. It was perfect.

Today we got that feeling back.

The snow was soft and fluffy and we had so much fun.

Arctic Blast

Everything seemed to go wrong.

I was bombarded at work and traffic was terrible. I was irritable and grouchy. And then I came home to this:

That’s right folks, it is supposed to freeze tonight. And maybe tomorrow night.

The local media are referring to the next few days as an “arctic blast.” Immediately I think about when Evan is eating ice cream or drinking his favorite slushie and without warning starts violently writhing about and screaming in pain. Because that is EXACTLY how I feel when there is a possibility of ice on the ground.

Tonight was warm when we went to the church for a youth activity. When the night is warm and blamy, it is a sign of a cold front coming rolling through. The night before our last snowstorm I wore a dress and flipflops to dinner.

With a large group of teenagers we sang karaoke, I laughed so hard I cried. I was hot and sweaty by the time the night was over.

I also heard some news about a friend that needs some extra prayers. Lots of prayers.

For her, the next few days and weeks will be cold too. Frighteningly so.

A chunk of words of comfort feel from my mouth but what I really wanted to tell her is that summer will be here shortly and that if there is one truth about Texas weather, it is that the ice will always melt.
